EATING WELL

    EATING WELL

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  I love a holiday that’s devoted to giving thanks- to pausing to be grateful and appreciative, to thinking of and feeling our blessings.  Yet, it’s also a holiday of abundant food.  Celebrating abundance is also wonderful- yet it feels more complicated to me.  It awakens my tendency to lose myself in the desire to eat- and eat more.  Each flavor, each smell, each enticing dish tempts me to eat more than my body can use well.  By well, I mean both experiencing the sensory satisfaction of enjoying each smell, color, texture and flavor, and eating what deeply satisfies and nourishes my body- and then to stop.

So, here’s my promise to my body this year.  I promise, dear body, that this year I will come to the Thanksgiving table with the loving intention to eat well. I will take a moment before I eat to settle, to become present.  I promise to attune to the deep enjoyment of family and friends, of gratitude for the bounty of my life, and, within that, to eat what nourishes you, my oldest, most faithful friend.

If you are also interested in Eating Well this Thanksgiving, I’ve included an induction that will help you to get in touch with your own multi-sensory experience of eating, and how you can eat well this year.
